    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of matrix vesicles in early calcification during experimentally induced atherosclerosis in rabbits and chickens.
    • To compare these findings with previous studies on human atherosclerosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Gross examination, light microscopy, and electron microscopy of aortas from rabbits and chickens.
    • Cytochemical techniques including pyroantimonate staining and enzyme assays (alkaline phosphatase, adenosine triphosphatase).
    • Induction of atherosclerosis using an atherogenic diet (cholesterol, peanut oil) for 1-3 months, with control groups on a normal diet.

    • Smooth muscle cell degeneration may contribute to the formation of these calcifying vesicles.
    • Findings provide a comparative basis for understanding early human atherosclerotic calcification.
