Exposure to hate speech (HS) causes desensitization, impacting psychophysiological reactions. This study used heart rate (HR) to show that prior HS exposure alters responses to hateful comments, unlike self-report measures.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Media Studies
Background:
- Exposure to hate speech (HS) is linked to listener desensitization.
- Previous research primarily relied on self-report measures to assess this desensitization.
- A need exists for objective, psychophysiological measures to understand HS effects.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the psychophysiological effects of hate speech (HS) exposure.
- To examine desensitization to HS using an unobtrusive, heart rate (HR) measure.
- To compare HR responses to HS in individuals with and without prior HS exposure.
Main Methods:
- An experimental study involving 56 participants.
- Utilized electrocardiogram (ECG) to record heart rate (HR).
- Participants were exposed to comments containing HS, with some pre-exposed to HS.
Main Results:
- Observed significant heart rate (HR) deceleration upon initial exposure to HS comments.
- Participants pre-exposed to HS did not exhibit the same HR deceleration.
- Demonstrated differential psychophysiological responses to HS based on prior exposure.
Conclusions:
- Frequent exposure to hate speech (HS) impacts not only beliefs but also psychophysiological reactions.
- Heart rate (HR) responses can serve as an objective measure of desensitization to HS.
- Findings highlight the tangible physiological consequences of prolonged exposure to hateful content.
