  • A manual search was conducted to identify social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) of accredited ophthalmology residency programs.
  • Data collected included geographical region and year of account creation (2009-2021).

  • 63% of 125 ophthalmology residency programs had at least one social media account, with 142 total accounts identified.
  • Instagram was the most utilized platform (45%), followed by Facebook (29%) and Twitter (26%).
  • A significant exponential increase in social media accounts was observed from 2009-2021 (R²=0.962), with 45% of accounts created after March 2020. Instagram saw the largest post-pandemic growth (p<0.001).

  • Social media platforms are increasingly becoming vital sources of information for ophthalmology residency applicants.
  • Continued expansion of social media presence by residency programs is anticipated.
