Summary
Liver transplantation (LT) for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) in Brazil shows good survival rates. PSC recurrence was observed in 8.1% of patients, with overall patient and graft survival rates exceeding 80% at five years.
Area of Science:
- Hepatology
- Transplant Surgery
- Autoimmune Diseases
Background:
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic liver disease with limited treatment options.
- Liver transplantation (LT) is the only curative therapy for advanced PSC.
- PSC accounts for 5% of adult LT indications, highlighting its significance in transplant centers.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the indications and outcomes of LT in patients with PSC.
- To assess patient and graft survival rates following LT for PSC.
- To analyze PSC recurrence post-transplantation in a Brazilian cohort.
Main Methods:
- A longitudinal observational study was conducted.
- Retrospective review of electronic medical records and study protocols from January 2011 to December 2021.
- Data from three major liver transplantation centers in southern Brazil were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Out of 1,362 LTs, 37 were for PSC.
- One-year and five-year patient survival rates were 83.8% and 80.6%, respectively.
- One-year and five-year graft survival rates were 83.8% and 74.8%, respectively. PSC recurrence was noted in 8.1% of cases.
Conclusions:
- LT in PSC patients demonstrated favorable patient and graft survival outcomes.
- The study confirms LT as an effective treatment for PSC.
- Common factors associated with LT mortality were observed in the PSC cohort.
