Background:

  • Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disorder causing progressive muscle weakness.
  • Chronic fatigue is a prevalent symptom in SMA, yet its full impact remains under-quantified.
  • Cure SMA surveyed adult SMA patients to assess fatigue's burden.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the impact of chronic fatigue in adults with SMA.
  • To evaluate the utility of multiple fatigue assessment instruments in the SMA population.
  • To identify factors associated with fatigue levels in SMA.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was administered to 253 adults with SMA.
  • Respondents completed demographic, treatment, and quality of life questions.
  • Participants were randomized to three of five fatigue scales: MFIS, MFI, FSS, PedsQL MF, or SMA-HI fatigue modules.

  • Statistically significant differences in certain fatigue-related variables were observed when comparing adults with SMA to the general population.
  • No significant differences in fatigue levels were found among key subgroups within the SMA population.
