Intellectual Disability01:29

Intellectual Disability

57
Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in intellectual and adaptive functioning that manifest during the developmental period. This condition encompasses challenges in reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and learning, accompanied by impairments in everyday life skills, such as communication, self-care, and social interactions. Intellectual disability affects approximately 1% of the population in the United States, impacting an estimated 5...

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

151
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Modeling in Therapy

92
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Environmental Influences on Intelligence01:29

Environmental Influences on Intelligence

309
Despite the strong genetic influence on traits like intelligence, environmental factors significantly shape outcomes. For example, while over 90% of height variation is due to genetic differences, environmental factors such as nutrition also have a notable impact. Similarly, for intelligence, changes in a child's surroundings can significantly alter their IQ. Research shows that enriched environments boost children's academic success and help them develop key cognitive skills. Children...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Public Health
  • Disability Studies

Background:

  • Rising prevalence of developmental disabilities (DD) in the US.
  • Insufficient healthcare professional training for this population, especially adults.
  • Need for improved healthcare access and quality for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe an intervention using the National Inclusive Curriculum for Health Education (NICHE).
  • To improve healthcare professionals' knowledge and attitudes towards PWIDD.
  • To address gaps in care for adults with DD.

Main Methods:

  • A 4-hour intervention integrated didactic sessions, a panel presentation by self-advocates and a parent, and clinical skills practice.
  • Targeted second-year medical students.
  • Evaluated using pre/post NICHE Knowledge and Attitudes surveys, analyzing differences by demographics and prior experience.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in both knowledge (65 to 73) and attitudes (0.55 to 0.53) scores post-intervention (p=0.00).
  • Higher pretest knowledge observed in female students and those with more prior experience with PWIDD.
  • Students reported prior training as 'lacking' and found the intervention effective.

Conclusions:

  • A brief NICHE intervention significantly improved medical students' knowledge and attitudes towards PWIDD.
  • Highlights the need for replication and sustainability of such programs.
  • Addresses critical gaps in healthcare for PWIDD.
