Area of Science:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Limited understanding exists regarding hand therapists' clinical practices for assessing and treating proprioception deficits.
  • No prior surveys have detailed proprioception practice patterns among hand therapists.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate current practice patterns of hand therapists in the United States concerning the assessment and treatment of proprioception deficits.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study design was employed using a survey instrument.
  • The survey was distributed to certified hand therapists and members of the American Society of Hand Therapists.
  • Reporting of survey results followed the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys.

Main Results:

  • 152 members of the American Society of Hand Therapists responded to the survey.
  • 82% of respondents reported providing rehabilitation services for proprioceptive deficits.
  • Most therapists utilize standardized assessment techniques, with higher confidence in treating (7.2/10) than assessing (6.1/10) proprioception deficits.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of hand therapists evaluate and treat proprioception deficits across diverse diagnoses.
  • Open- and closed-chain exercises, along with elastic taping, are frequently used interventions.
  • Treatment frequency and duration for proprioception deficits vary among practitioners.
