    Background:

    • Hepatitis A is a viral infection affecting the liver.
    • Haptoglobin (Hp) is a protein synthesized by the liver, involved in hemoglobin binding.
    • Changes in Hp levels may reflect liver function during hepatitis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum haptoglobin (Hp) values in patients with acute hepatitis A.
    • To assess the diagnostic potential of Hp levels for staging acute hepatitis A.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from patients positive for total Hepatitis A virus (HAV) antibody.
    • Serum Hp levels were measured during the early clinical and healing stages of acute hepatitis A.
    • Hp values were compared to standard levels and between disease stages.

    Main Results:

    • Mean serum Hp values were significantly lower (100.57 +/- 25.20 mg/dl) in the early stage of acute hepatitis A compared to standard values.
    • Serum Hp values increased to normal levels (128.36 +/- 29.83 mg/dl) during the healing stage, with no significant difference from standard.
    • A significant difference in Hp values was observed between the early and healing stages of acute hepatitis A.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatic haptoglobin biosynthesis is impaired in the early clinical stage of acute hepatitis A.
    • Hp biosynthesis capacity recovers during the healing phase of the disease.
    • Serum haptoglobin levels can serve as a valuable indicator for assessing the stage of acute hepatitis A.
