What is the correct specific epithet for pathogenic Leptospirae?

E Kmety, H Mochmann

Zentralblatt Fur Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie, Und Hygiene. Series A, Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Virology, Parasitology
    |September 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

The first valid description of Leptospira, a genus of bacteria, was established in 1914 for saprophytic species and 1915 for pathogenic species. Stimson's 1907 publication is not considered a valid genus description due to inadequate documentation.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Bacteriology
    • Taxonomy

    Background:

    • The genus Leptospira comprises pathogenic and saprophytic spirochetes.
    • Accurate taxonomic classification relies on valid species descriptions adhering to nomenclature codes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To revise the original documentation for the genus Leptospira.
    • To determine the first validly described species of pathogenic and saprophytic Leptospira.

    Main Methods:

    • Critical review of historical scientific literature.
    • Evaluation of documentation supporting early Leptospira species descriptions.

    Main Results:

    • Stimson's 1907 description of Spirochaeta interrogans is deemed inadequate for genus recognition.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The first valid description of saprophytic Leptospira was by Wolbach and Binger (1914).
  • The first valid description of pathogenic Leptospira was by Inada and Ido (1915), naming it icterohaemorrhagiae.
  • Conclusions:

    • The species name 'interrogans' is not in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature.
    • The correct names are Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae for pathogenic and Leptospira biflexa for saprophytic species.
