Two rare cases of renal oncocytoma, a benign kidney tumor, were identified in Japan. These findings contribute to understanding the incidence and morphology of this uncommon renal neoplasm.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Renal oncocytomas are rare benign kidney tumors.
    • Previous reports from Japan are limited, with only five cases documented.
    • This study presents two new cases to expand the understanding of this condition.

    Observation:

    • Case 1 involved a 63-year-old woman with an incidentally discovered cystic renal mass.
    • The resected tumor was a large, unilocular, thick-walled cyst containing bloody fluid.
    • Histology revealed oncocytes with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and mitochondria.

    Findings:

    • Case 2 identified a 1 cm renal tumor during an autopsy of a 70-year-old woman.
    • The tumor exhibited a uniform, tan-brown cut surface.
    • Microscopic examination confirmed the presence of oncocytes, consistent with Case 1.

    Implications:

    • These cases add to the limited Japanese data on renal oncocytomas.
    • Detailed morphological descriptions aid in the diagnosis and differentiation of renal tumors.
    • Further research into the incidence and characteristics of renal oncocytomas is warranted.
