    Background:

    • Unprocessed human milk is increasingly used for feeding premature infants.
    • Potential risks associated with bacterial contamination in human milk require investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess bacterial growth and contamination in unprocessed human milk samples over five days.

    Main Methods:

    • 41 samples of unprocessed human milk were analyzed for bacterial growth.
    • Milk samples were stored under refrigeration for five days.
    • Bacterial concentrations were quantified, and identified bacteria were compared to normal skin flora.

    Main Results:

    • Bacteria were cultured in 33 out of 41 samples, with counts initially ranging from 1000 to 140,000 colonies/mL.
