Summary

Treating chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with endoscopic sinus surgery improved sexual function in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Post-surgery, patients reported better erectile function and satisfaction, suggesting a link between upper airway health and sexual outcomes.

Background:

  • Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an upper airway inflammatory condition impacting quality of life.
  • CRS is increasingly recognized as a potential comorbidity associated with erectile dysfunction (ED).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of endoscopic sinus surgery for CRS on the sexual function of patients with ED.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study included 53 patients (40-70 years) with CRS (with and without nasal polyps).
  • Preoperative and postoperative assessments used the Nasal Obstruction Symptoms Evaluation (NOSE) score and the 5th International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score.

Main Results:

  • The average NOSE score significantly improved from 72.6 to 24.9 post-surgery.
  • The average IIEF-5 score increased from 16.35 preoperatively to 19.52 postoperatively.
  • Significant improvements were observed in erectile function for penetration (p=0.024) and overall satisfaction (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic sinus surgery for CRS demonstrates potential benefits for sexual outcomes in patients with ED.
  • Treating upper airway diseases like sinusitis may positively impact sexual health in individuals with erectile dysfunction.
