This study found that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients frequently have type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD), hypertension, and dyslipidemia, with higher prevalence in severe COPD cases.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonary Medicine
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology
Background:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) involves local and systemic inflammation, leading to irreversible airway obstruction.
- COPD exacerbations are frequent and often associated with comorbidities, impacting disease progression.
- Understanding these comorbidities is crucial for managing COPD's systemic effects.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of comorbidities in Iraqi COPD patients.
- To investigate the association between comorbidities and COPD severity.
- To highlight the systemic nature of COPD.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 200 participants (100 COPD patients, 100 controls) was conducted in Annajaf, Iraq.
- COPD patients were categorized into four severity groups.
- Prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD), hypertension, and dyslipidemia was assessed.
Main Results:
- COPD patients exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of T2DM, ASCVD, hypertension, and dyslipidemia compared to controls.
- Except for T2DM, the prevalence of these comorbidities increased significantly with greater COPD severity.
- T2DM, ASCVD, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are common in COPD patients.
Conclusions:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are frequently associated with COPD.
- These comorbidities are more prevalent in patients with severe COPD, underscoring the systemic impact of the disease.
- Managing these comorbidities is essential for comprehensive COPD care.
