Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Background:

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare, slow-growing soft tissue sarcoma originating in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue.
The etiology of DFSP remains largely unknown, contributing to diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

A case report of an 18-year-old female with type 1 diabetes mellitus presenting with a six-month history of a left breast lump and skin discoloration.
Breast ultrasound revealed an indistinct, oval, hyperechoic mass with mild internal vascularity, measuring 1.4 x 1.0 x 2.5 cm.
Ultrasound-guided biopsy confirmed Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).

Findings:

The patient underwent consultation with multidisciplinary oncology teams, leading to a recommendation for surgical excision.
Wide local surgical excision was performed, with subsequent surgical pathology confirming negative margins.

Implications:

This case underscores the importance of a high index of suspicion for DFSP in young patients presenting with palpable breast masses and associated skin changes.
Early and accurate diagnosis through imaging and biopsy is crucial for effective management of DFSP.
Multidisciplinary oncology care is essential for optimal treatment planning and patient outcomes in rare soft tissue malignancies.
