Summary

Re-irradiation of previously treated high-grade liposarcoma is feasible and safe. Careful patient selection allows for successful re-irradiation, improving outcomes for recurrent tumors.

Background:

  • External beam radiation therapy dogma contraindicates re-irradiation due to tissue risks.
  • High-grade liposarcoma has a poor prognosis and frequent recurrences.

Observation:

  • A case of multiply recurrent liposarcoma was treated with re-irradiation of an extended field.
  • The re-irradiation field encompassed the gross recurrent tumor and previously irradiated areas.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced a very good cosmetic outcome.
  • The patient remained disease-free for 3 years post-treatment.

Implications:

  • Challenging established dogmas on re-irradiation can improve care for selected patients.
  • Careful patient selection enables safe and effective re-irradiation of recurrent high-grade tumors.
  • Re-irradiation can lead to improved clinical outcomes in recurrent liposarcoma.
