    Background:

    • Short birth intervals are a potential risk factor for adverse birth outcomes.
    • Previous studies have suggested a link between interpregnancy interval and infant health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between interpregnancy interval and the risk of delivering a low birthweight newborn.
    • To determine if shorter interpregnancy intervals impact gestational age at delivery.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective cohort study of 1683 women delivering at Yale-New Haven Hospital (1980-1982).
    • Analysis compared risk of low birthweight (less than 2500 gm) for interpregnancy intervals of 1-4 months and 5-8 months versus 9+ months.
    • Adjustments made for maternal age, ethnicity, prior birth outcomes, and smoking.

    Main Results:

    • Women conceiving 1-4 months after a prior live birth had a significantly increased risk of low birthweight (Relative Risk = 5.70).

    • Short interpregnancy intervals (less than 8 months) are associated with an elevated risk of delivering a low birthweight infant.
    • These findings may explain previously reported associations between short birth intervals and increased perinatal mortality.
    • Optimal birth spacing is crucial for improving infant birthweight outcomes.
