1The Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.
Two customer archetypes for hearing aid purchases were identified, revealing distinct motivations. Despite differing online or in-person comfort levels, both groups currently prefer in-person hearing healthcare services.
Area of Science:
- Audiology
- Consumer Behavior
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Understanding consumer motivations is crucial for hearing aid adoption.
- Previous research has not extensively explored distinct customer archetypes in hearing healthcare purchasing decisions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify unique customer archetypes influencing hearing aid purchasing decisions.
- To analyze motivations for choosing in-person versus online hearing aid acquisition.
Main Methods:
- A consumer survey was developed based on 11 semistructured interviews with first-time hearing aid users.
- A 28-item online questionnaire was distributed to 1,377 U.S. residents over 50 with no prior hearing aid experience.
- Data analysis identified five key factors to develop customer archetypes.
Main Results:
- Two distinct customer archetypes emerged: those comfortable with online health consumption and those preferring in-person interactions.
- Key influencing factors included Physician Trust, Sociability, Comfort Buying Online, Verify Sources, and Reliance on Others.
- Eighty-four percent of respondents opted for an in-person pathway for hearing healthcare, irrespective of their archetype.
Conclusions:
- The identified archetypes highlight varying levels of comfort with digital health engagement.
- Currently, both archetypes predominantly favor in-person models for obtaining hearing aids.
- Future strategies should consider these archetypes while acknowledging the current preference for in-person care.
