    Summary

This study introduces an adaptive decision threshold (ADT) scheme to combat multipath interference (MPI) in optical data center networks. The ADT dynamically adjusts thresholds to significantly improve the performance of 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals.

    Area of Science:

    • Optical Communications
    • Data Center Networking
    • Signal Processing

    Background:

    • Short-reach optical transmission systems, particularly those using intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD), are crucial for data centers.
    • Multipath interference (MPI) poses a significant challenge in complex network topologies, causing signal fluctuations and degrading performance in 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) systems.
    • Existing methods for mitigating MPI in PAM4 signals often involve high computational complexity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and evaluate an adaptive decision threshold (ADT) scheme for mitigating the impact of MPI on PAM4 signals in IM/DD optical transmission systems.
    • To demonstrate the effectiveness of the ADT scheme in real-time tracking and compensation of signal fluctuations caused by MPI.
    • To compare the performance and computational complexity of the ADT scheme against existing MPI mitigation algorithms.

    Main Methods:

    • Development of an adaptive decision threshold (ADT) algorithm designed to dynamically update decision thresholds in real-time.
    • Numerical simulations were conducted to assess the bit error rate (BER) performance of PAM4 transmission systems impaired by various levels of MPI and different laser linewidths.
    • Performance comparison of the ADT scheme with established MPI mitigation algorithms (A1 and A2) under specific system conditions (50-Gbps PAM4 transmission, KP4-FEC criterion).

    Main Results:

    • The proposed ADT scheme significantly improves the bit error rate (BER) performance in PAM4 transmission systems affected by MPI.
    • The ADT scheme demonstrates enhanced tolerance to MPI, exceeding 6 dB improvement at the KP4-forward error correction (FEC) criterion (2.4 × 10⁻⁴) in a 50-Gbps system.
    • The ADT scheme exhibits superior denoising performance compared to existing algorithms A1 and A2, while also offering lower computational complexity.

    Conclusions:

    • The adaptive decision threshold (ADT) scheme is an effective method for mitigating multipath interference in PAM4 optical transmission systems.
    • The ADT scheme provides a practical and efficient solution for improving signal integrity and transmission performance in data center networks.
    • The ADT scheme's lower computational complexity makes it a highly viable option for implementation in modern high-speed optical communication systems.
