Eperisone hydrochloride may cause reversible muscle weakness in patients with incomplete paraplegia. This adverse effect, observed post-surgery, suggests caution when prescribing this muscle relaxant to this patient population.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Pharmacology
- Spinal Surgery
Background:
- A 65-year-old female with thoracic spinal stenosis underwent spinal fusion.
- Postoperative rehabilitation included management of neurological deficits.
Observation:
- The patient developed thigh pain, lower limb convulsions, and fatigue.
- Eperisone hydrochloride was administered for symptom relief.
- A significant decrease in muscle strength was noted after 14 doses.
Findings:
- The observed muscle strength decline was reversible upon discontinuation of eperisone hydrochloride.
- This adverse effect is not documented in current Chinese medication instructions.
- Symptoms resolved within 4 days of stopping the medication.
Implications:
- Eperisone hydrochloride may pose a risk of further muscle strength reduction in patients with incomplete paraplegia.
- Clinicians should be aware of this potential adverse effect.
- Medication guidelines for eperisone hydrochloride may require updating to include this risk warning.

Disorders of the Skeletal Muscle
Musculoskeletal disorders
Musculoskeletal disorders involve injuries and conditions affecting the skeletal muscles and associated connective tissues. These disorders can arise from acute biomechanical stresses or chronic overuse and can occur across different age groups. Exercise and Muscle Performance
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...
