Summary

Post-operative bleeding and pain are common after pediatric tonsillectomy, with bleeding affecting 44% of children. Intracapsular coblation tonsillectomy significantly reduces both bleeding and pain, improving recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency and severity of post-operative bleeding following pediatric tonsillectomy.
  • To analyze the intensity and pattern of post-operative pain in children after tonsillectomy.
  • To identify factors influencing post-operative bleeding and pain, including surgical technique.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational cohort study across 12 otolaryngology units in Northern England.
  • Recruitment of children aged 4-16 undergoing tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy) for benign conditions.

  • Intracapsular coblation tonsillectomy demonstrated superiority over other techniques in minimizing both post-operative bleeding and pain.
  • Findings emphasize the need to inform patient consent regarding expected post-surgical recovery, particularly highlighting the benefits of intracapsular coblation tonsillectomy.
