Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery may lead to more mammograms post-operation. However, it does not increase the need for further imaging or biopsies compared to standard breast-conserving surgery.

Background:

  • Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) patients may fear recurrence.
  • Post-operative granulation tissue and fat necrosis can lead to increased examinations, costs, and patient stress.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBS) leads to increased post-operative imaging and unnecessary evaluations compared to conservative breast-conserving surgery (BCS).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 432 patients undergoing BCS between 2013-2017.
  • Patients divided into two groups: conservative BCS (Group 1) and oncoplastic BCS (Group 2).
  • Comparison of post-operative radiological examinations, suspected findings, and biopsy rates.

Main Results:

  • Higher mammography use in the oncoplastic group (p=0.003).
  • No significant difference in overall additional imaging or biopsy needs between groups (p=0.138).
  • Similar rates of suspicious radiological findings requiring biopsy (15.8% vs. 13.1%) and malignant biopsy results (12.8%).

Conclusions:

  • Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery may increase post-operative mammography frequency.
  • No statistically significant difference in total additional imaging or biopsy requirements between conservative BCS and OBS.
