Primary Healthcare Services

1.4K
Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.
In 1978, international leaders convened in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, for what would be a pivotal event in global health. The Alma-Ata Declaration was the first to call...

Secondary Healthcare System01:11

Secondary Healthcare System

1.5K
Secondary healthcare is offered by a specialist, generally in hospitals or clinics for patients referred by primary healthcare providers. It occurs when a person has an illness or injury that requires specific medical care. Secondary care is often referred to as acute care. Secondary care can range from uncomplicated care to repair a minor laceration or treat a strep throat infection to more complicated emergent care, such as treating a head injury sustained in an automobile accident. Whatever...

Tertiary Healthcare System

1.8K
Specialized care provided over an extended period is called tertiary care. Usually, a primary or secondary care physician will refer a patient to tertiary care. A patient's maximum physical and mental function is restored in tertiary care, which is caused due to the impact of a chronic illness or condition. Tertiary care aims to achieve the highest level of functioning possible while managing chronic illness. For example, a patient who falls and fractures their hip will need secondary care...

Urinary Tract Infection III: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

14
A healthcare provider can diagnose a urinary tract infection (UTI) through several methods:Medical History and Symptoms: The provider will take a detailed medical history and ask about symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain.Urinalysis: A clean-catch urine sample is collected in a sterile container and tested for the presence of bacteria, white blood cells (leukocytes), nitrites, blood, and protein. The presence of leukocytes and...

Preventive Healthcare Services

1.0K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Chronic Kidney Disease III: Interprofessional Care

13
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires collaborative and comprehensive management. CKD progresses through stages and can lead to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) if untreated. Interprofessional collaboration and patient education are crucial, enabling patients to manage their health and improve their quality of life.Diagnostic approach for chronic kidney diseaseThe diagnosis of CKD primarily focuses on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which assesses kidney function by measuring how well...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Public Health
  • Healthcare Professional Development

Background:

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is crucial for enhancing medical practice quality and ethics.
  • Uganda faces persistent malpractice reports, indicating a potential gap in professional development.
  • Assessed training needs should inform CPD activities for medical doctors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training needs of doctors in public primary care facilities in central Uganda.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 100 doctors in central Uganda's public primary care facilities.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) Hennessy-Hicks questionnaire was utilized to assess training needs.
  • Descriptive statistics and content analysis were applied to evaluate the importance, performance, and training needs of various activities.

Main Results:

  • The study achieved a 91% response rate, with participants averaging 37.9 years old.
  • Research and audit emerged as the domain with the highest CPD training need (mean score 1.94 ± 1.69).
  • Administration (1.58 ± 1.61) and clinical tasks (1.28 ± 1.29) also showed significant training needs, with clinical tasks having the most suggested topics.

Conclusions:

  • Research and audit, alongside clinical tasks, are critical domains for CPD training for primary care doctors in this region.
  • The findings provide valuable insights for CPD providers to tailor programs effectively.
  • Addressing identified CPD needs can contribute to improved healthcare delivery and reduced malpractice incidents.
