Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals' mental health is often assessed using screening measures.
Previous research on TGD mental health with omnibus measures has relied on older versions of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventories (MMPIs).

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the psychometric properties of the MMPI-3 in a TGD community sample.
To compare MMPI-3 mean scores between TGD and cisgender individuals.

Main Methods:

Assessed MMPI-3 scale reliability and validity with a TGD sample (n=97).
Conducted mean score comparisons between TGD and cisgender subsamples, and between TGD individuals with and without current mental health treatment, and an outpatient mental health sample.

Main Results:

MMPI-3 scales demonstrated generally good reliability and validity for TGD individuals.
Fewer score differences were observed between TGD individuals not in treatment and the MMPI-3 normative sample compared to prior research.
MMPI-3 scales appear suitable for identifying mental health needs in TGD individuals.

Conclusions:

The MMPI-3 exhibits appropriate psychometric functioning for use with TGD populations.
The MMPI-3 may serve as a valuable instrument for assessing the mental health of TGD individuals.
Further research is needed to fully understand the MMPI-3's application in TGD mental health assessment.
