The Availability Heuristic

6.0K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Dental Education
  • Admissions Processes
  • Medical Informatics

Background:

  • Dental school admissions interviews are crucial for applicant evaluation.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to virtual interview formats.
  • This study examines the transition and impact of virtual interviews in dental admissions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the perspectives of both interviewees and interviewers on the virtual dental school interview process.
  • To compare the outcomes of virtual interviews with traditional in-person interviews.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative analysis of admission data (undergraduate and application scores, interview scores) for in-person versus virtual interviews (classes of 2016-2025).
  • Surveys administered to admissions committee members and interviewees using Likert scales and free responses to assess virtual interview experiences.
  • Analysis of agreement on desirable and undesirable aspects of the virtual interview format.

Main Results:

  • Virtual candidates potentially had higher overall academic and application scores, and interview scores compared to in-person candidates.
  • Both groups agreed on key benefits (cost, convenience, safety) and drawbacks (lack of visual cues, personal contact, connectivity issues).
  • While 74% of committee members would recommend virtual interviews, only 49% of interviewees agreed.

Conclusions:

  • The shift to virtual interviews, driven by the pandemic, provided valuable insights into their effectiveness and appropriateness for future dental school admissions.
  • Further exploration is warranted to optimize virtual interview strategies and address identified limitations.
