Background:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) management necessitates medication adherence and patient engagement in shared decision-making.
Technology-based interventions can enhance patient knowledge and self-management skills for chronic conditions.
A web-based intervention was developed to empower RA patients to adhere to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).

Purpose of the Study:

To detail the intervention mapping process for designing a web-based tool supporting patient empowerment and medication adherence in RA.
To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of this web-based intervention among RA patients.

Main Methods:

The Patient Empowerment to Medication Adherence Programme (PE2MAP) was developed using a 6-step intervention mapping process based on the Zimmerman Psychological Empowerment framework.
PE2MAP is a 4-week web-based program delivered via Udemy, complemented by an RA handbook.
A feasibility randomized controlled trial with 30 RA patients on DMARDs assessed the intervention's acceptability and feasibility.

High completion rates (87%) and engagement with content (57% completed 100%) indicate PE2MAP's feasibility.

Further randomized controlled trials are recommended to confirm the intervention's effectiveness in RA management.
