Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

26
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Area of Science:

  • Nursing Informatics
  • Health Information Systems
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Nurses' informatics competencies are crucial for quality patient care and effective use of health information systems (HIS).
  • Assessing these competencies is vital in the context of rapidly advancing digital healthcare environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe Finnish nurses' perceptions of their informatics competencies related to health information system usage.
  • To identify factors influencing these competencies, particularly in relation to nursing documentation, digital environment, and data protection.

Main Methods:

  • A web-based questionnaire was distributed to 58,276 nurses in Finland via three Nursing Associations.
  • Data from 3,610 respondents were analyzed using descriptive and explanatory statistics.
  • Competencies were assessed across three domains: nursing documentation, digital environment, and ethics and data protection.

Main Results:

  • Nurses demonstrated good overall informatics competency, with higher scores in "ethics and data protection" compared to "nursing documentation" and "digital environment."
  • Recently graduated nurses and those in specific settings (outpatient, virtual hospital, examination, operation) showed higher "digital environment" scores.
  • Experience with health information systems correlated positively with "nursing documentation" competency.

Conclusions:

  • Finnish nurses are highly qualified HIS users, but face challenges from increasing digitalization.
  • There is a clear need to enhance educational programs focusing on digital device usage and patient support for digital services.
