This study translated and validated the suicide risk scale for medical inpatients into Urdu. The Urdu version is a reliable and valid tool for assessing suicide risk in Pakistani medical patients.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychometrics
- Cross-cultural adaptation
Background:
- Suicide risk assessment is crucial for medical inpatients.
- Existing tools may not be culturally appropriate or accessible in Urdu.
- The need for a validated Urdu version of the suicide risk scale.
Purpose of the Study:
- To translate the suicide risk scale for medical inpatients into Urdu.
- To validate the Urdu version for use in Pakistani medical settings.
- To establish the psychometric properties of the Urdu suicide risk scale.
Main Methods:
- Correlational study with a non-random sample (n=200) in Pakistan.
- Forward and backward translation of the suicide risk scale from English to Urdu.
- Psychometric evaluation including exploratory factor analysis, reliability (Cronbach's alpha, split-half), and validity (convergent, discriminant).
Main Results:
- Exploratory factor analysis identified two factors.
- The Urdu version demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha).
- Convergent and discriminant validity were supported by Pearson's correlation coefficients.
Conclusions:
- The Urdu version of the suicide risk scale is a reliable and valid instrument.
- It is suitable for assessing suicide risk among medical inpatients in Pakistan.
- Facilitates culturally sensitive suicide risk assessment in Urdu-speaking populations.
