Background:

  • Childhood immunization status is often based on documentation, but many children lack vaccination records.
  • Discrepancies exist between claimed and documented vaccinations in some communities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate routine immunization coverage in children by combining documented vaccinations with tracking of undocumented immunizations.
  • To improve the reliability of vaccination coverage estimates.

Main Methods:

  • A community-based survey was conducted on children aged 0-59 months.
  • Immunization status was assessed using vaccination documents and a questionnaire for undocumented cases.
  • Vaccination coverage and completeness were estimated using immunization cards and re-estimated after tracking.

Main Results:

  • Of 1072 children aged 12-59 months, 18.1% had documented Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, and Hib (DPT-Hi+Hb) 3rd dose, while 37.2% had it with tracking.
  • Dropout rates from DPT-Hi+Hb 1st to 3rd dose were 19.1% with documentation and 42.4% with tracking.

Conclusions:

  • Tracking immunization status in children without evidence improves the accuracy of vaccination coverage estimates.
  • This strategy can enhance the planning and implementation of vaccination coverage surveys for Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) vaccines.
