Administering Oxygen by Mask01:30

Administering Oxygen by Mask

389
Administering Oxygen by Mask
Administering oxygen by mask is a common nursing intervention that provides supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory distress or chronic lung conditions. This procedure involves delivering oxygen at a specified rate through a face mask connected to an oxygen source.
Equipment
The equipment necessary for this procedure includes:

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings II: Doffing

The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning

982
Donning PPE must be completed before contact with the patient. This process protects from infectious agents. The sequence and action included in each donning are critical, and the steps must be systematic to avoid exposure to pathogens. The institutional policy also needs to be followed while donning PPE. The pre-donning preparations are gathering equipment, inspecting the PPE equipment for tears, holes, or damage, removing jewelry, removing any garments below the elbows, and tying the hair...

Therapeutic Communication01:30

Therapeutic Communication

4.5K
Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

Tracheostomy Care II: Procedure

205
Tracheostomy care is an essential nursing skill that involves cleaning and maintaining a tracheostomy tube to prevent infection and other complications. Here's a step-by-step guide explaining each procedure with its rationale. Note that disposable gloves are to be worn at all times and changed as often as needed to maintain a sterile work environment, and to protect both patient and healthcare worker.
Step 1: Perform hand hygiene, and put on personal protective equipment: gown, gloves, mask...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II: ACLS Airway Management

15
Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned...

Summary

Wearing facemasks can hinder communication. Standard surgical masks impact speech less, and clear speech, noise reduction, and amplification aid understanding in healthcare settings.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare communication
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Respiratory illness mitigation

Background:

  • Facemasks are essential PPE for reducing respiratory illness transmission.
  • Masks can create significant communication barriers between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Effective communication is vital for quality patient care and safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a scoping review to identify effective communication strategies used with facemasks.
  • To synthesize evidence on communication practices in healthcare settings while wearing facemasks.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase databases.
  • PEO (Population, Exposure, Outcome) methodology for the scoping review.
  • Appraisal using Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice guidelines for quality assessment.

Main Results:

  • Seventeen high/good quality studies and 22 non-research articles were included.
  • Standard surgical masks had the least impact on speech perception compared to other non-transparent types.
  • Recognizing emotions was less accurate; strategies like noise reduction, voice amplification, and clear speech were beneficial.

Conclusions:

  • Awareness of facemask-related communication challenges is critical.
  • Further high-quality research is needed to evaluate communication techniques.
  • Selecting appropriate masks, reducing noise, and using clear speech are recommended strategies.
