Eyelid metastasis from cervical cancer is rare, often presenting as an unexplained mass. This case highlights the importance of considering metastatic disease in patients with a history of cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Metastatic malignant lesions to the eyelids are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all eyelid tumors.
  • Eyelid metastasis as the initial presentation of cervical cancer has not been previously reported.

Observation:

  • A patient with a history of stage IB1 cervical cancer presented with a 2-month history of a gradually enlarging lower eyelid mass.
  • The eyelid mass was surgically excised and found to be histologically and immunohistochemically consistent with cervical cancer.

Findings:

  • Metastatic examination revealed no other metastatic lesions or lymph node involvement.
  • The patient responded well to subsequent local radiation therapy.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering metastatic disease, particularly from cervical cancer, when evaluating unexplained eyelid masses in patients with a prior cancer diagnosis.
  • Increased vigilance is crucial for identifying rare metastatic presentations to the eyelids.
