Compassion-oriented and Mindfulness-based Exposure Therapy (CoMET) significantly reduced posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and emotion dysregulation. This 8-week intervention improved mindfulness, self-compassion, and quality of life in participants.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) can persist and be debilitating, with emotion dysregulation potentially contributing to residual symptoms.
- Mindfulness and compassion practices are linked to emotion regulation, but their specific impact on individuals with PTSS is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the effectiveness of an 8-week Compassion-oriented and Mindfulness-based Exposure Therapy (CoMET) for individuals experiencing PTSS.
- To investigate CoMET's influence on emotion regulation, mindfulness, self-compassion, and quality of life in a PTSS cohort.
Main Methods:
- A waitlist control design was employed with 28 participants (17 CoMET, 11 waitlist).
- Participants underwent an 8-week CoMET intervention.
- Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain network connectivity analysis was used to assess changes in functional connectivity.
Main Results:
- CoMET significantly decreased PTSS severity, emotion dysregulation, and experiential avoidance.
- Participants showed significant increases in mindfulness, self-compassion, and quality of life post-intervention.
- EEG analysis revealed increased alpha-band connectivity in emotion-regulating brain networks, including the amygdala, following CoMET.
Conclusions:
- CoMET demonstrates promising outcomes for alleviating PTSS symptoms.
- The intervention appears to enhance emotion regulation capabilities in individuals with PTSS.
- CoMET effectively improves psychological well-being and brain function related to emotional processing.
