  • A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL databases was conducted from inception to September 2023.
  • Included studies involved adult patients undergoing otolaryngology treatments with reported DRS scores, following PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
  • Study quality was assessed using the Oxford Centre's Levels of Evidence.

Main Results:

  • Thirteen studies involving 6306 screened articles were included, focusing on head and neck (10), endocrine (1), general (1), and rhinology (1) subspecialties.
  • Decisional Regret Scale (DRS) scores ranged from 0-20 (median) or 10.1-23.9 (mean), indicating predominantly mild regret (DRS <25).
  • Higher decisional regret was observed after extensive head and neck procedures or multi-modal treatments, and correlated with depression, anxiety, and quality of life.

Conclusions:

  • This review indicates that most patients experience no or mild decisional regret following otolaryngology treatments.
  • The findings highlight the need for enhanced pre-operative counseling and shared decision-making strategies.
  • Future research should focus on interventions to further minimize decisional regret in otolaryngology patients.
