    The Journal of Reproductive Medicine
    |December 1, 1986

    Summary

Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis recovery from the chorion after birth correlated with longer labor duration. This finding was independent of membrane rupture timing, birth weight, or gestational age.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Obstetrics
    • Neonatal Research

    Background:

    • Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are common genital tract microbes.
    • Their presence in the chorioamnion has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between the recovery of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis from the chorion and labor-related factors.
    • To determine if labor length, membrane rupture to delivery interval, birth weight, or gestational age influence microbial recovery.

    Main Methods:

    • Samples of the freshly exposed chorion were collected immediately after delivery.
    • Microbial cultures were performed to identify Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis.
    • Statistical analysis was used to correlate microbial recovery with clinical parameters.

    Main Results:

    • Recovery of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis from the chorion was significantly associated with prolonged labor.
    • No significant association was found between microbial recovery and the interval between membrane rupture and delivery.
    • Birth weight and gestational age did not show a correlation with the presence of these microbes on the chorion.

    Conclusions:

    • Prolonged labor may be a contributing factor to the colonization of the chorion by Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis.
    • The findings suggest that labor duration is a more critical factor than membrane rupture timing or fetal parameters in chorionic microbial acquisition.
