Most Iranian patients are aware of and prefer electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) systems. While satisfaction is generally positive, focusing on patient needs can enhance this mandated healthcare technology.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Public Health
- Healthcare Management
Background:
- Electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) systems offer potential benefits for healthcare quality and cost reduction.
- E-prescribing has been a mandated system in Iran since December 2021.
- Understanding patient perceptions is crucial for the successful implementation of e-prescribing.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate patient perceptions of the mandated e-prescribing system in Iran.
- To assess patient satisfaction, attitude, and perceived impact of e-prescribing on care.
Main Methods:
- A descriptive-analytic cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 involving 394 patients from five teaching hospitals.
- Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire.
- Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and inferential tests (Pearson, Spearman, ANOVA, t-test).
Main Results:
- Approximately 85% of patients were aware of the e-prescribing system, with 70% preferring it.
- Mean patient satisfaction and attitude scores were 3.91/5 and 3.45/5, respectively.
- A significant correlation was found between the perceived impact on patient care and patient attitude towards e-prescribing.
Conclusions:
- The majority of patients are aware of and prefer the e-prescribing system, reporting positive overall satisfaction.
- SMS-based tracking codes were the most favored method for prescription tracking by patients.
- Enhancing patient-centered care requires greater patient engagement and consideration of their needs within the e-prescribing system.
