    Summary

    Catecholamine sulfates, the main form of catecholamines in humans, were investigated as substrates for key enzymes. Dopamine and noradrenaline sulfates do not serve as alternate substrates for dopamine-beta-hydroxylase or phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase.

    Background:

    • Catecholamines, including dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline, are vital neurotransmitters and hormones.
    • Catecholamine sulfates are the predominant circulating forms in human tissues.
    • Understanding the metabolism of catecholamine sulfates is crucial for comprehending catecholamine homeostasis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether dopamine sulfate and noradrenaline sulfate can act as alternate substrates for dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) and phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT), respectively.
    • To elucidate the role of catecholamine sulfates in catecholamine biosynthesis pathways.

    • Chemical synthesis and purification of dopamine 3-sulfate, dopamine 4-sulfate, and noradrenaline 3-sulfate.

    • These findings suggest that catecholamine sulfates do not directly participate in the enzymatic conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline or noradrenaline to adrenaline.
