Summary

Part-time employment in organizations does not correlate with sickness absence. This study found no link between the extent of part-time work and employee absenteeism rates.

Background:

  • Understanding the relationship between employment structures and employee well-being is crucial for organizational management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the prevalence of part-time work and sickness absence at the organizational level.
  • To determine if increased part-time employment in municipalities influences sickness absence rates.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a six-year panel dataset encompassing the entire population of Norwegian municipalities (N=422).
  • Linked objective register data on part-time employment and sickness absence.
  • Employed Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression with fixed effects for municipality and time to analyze the impact of part-time work on sickness absence.

Main Results:

  • A significant positive bivariate correlation was observed between the percentage of part-time positions and sickness absence at the municipal level (Pearson's r=0.25).
  • After controlling for municipality-specific fixed effects, time effects, economic factors, municipality size, female employee ratio, and general population characteristics, the multivariate regression coefficient for part-time work on sickness absence became insignificant (coefficient=1.56, robust standard error=1.31).

Conclusions:

  • Organizational use of part-time work is not statistically related to sickness absence.
  • Organizations with a higher proportion of part-time employees do not report increased levels of absenteeism compared to those with less part-time employment.
