Young e-cigarette users often lack awareness regarding nicotine forms (free-base vs. nicotine salt) and types (synthetic vs. tobacco-derived). Enhanced health communication and industry disclosures are needed to inform youth about nicotine dimensions and risks.
Area of Science:
- Adolescent Health
- Tobacco Control
- Pharmacology
Background:
- E-cigarette nicotine exists as free-base or nicotine salt, and as synthetic or tobacco-derived.
- These nicotine characteristics influence absorption, bioavailability, and sensory experience.
- Awareness of these nicotine dimensions among young e-cigarette users is largely unknown.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess awareness of nicotine form and type among adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users.
- To explore factors associated with awareness of nicotine dimensions in e-cigarettes.
Main Methods:
- Survey data collected from 271 Ohio youth (aged 15-24) who used e-cigarettes in the past 4 months.
- Participants reported on the presence, form (free-base/salt), and type (synthetic/tobacco-derived) of nicotine in their usual e-cigarette.
- Follow-up questions explored distinctions between synthetic and tobacco-derived nicotine experiences.
Main Results:
- A significant majority of youth (71.7%) were unaware if their e-cigarette nicotine was free-base or nicotine salt.
- Most youth (75.7%) did not know if their nicotine was synthetic or tobacco-derived.
- Higher frequency and quantity of e-cigarette use correlated with greater awareness; most could not differentiate sensory experiences between synthetic and tobacco-derived nicotine.
Conclusions:
- Youth e-cigarette users demonstrate limited understanding of the nicotine they consume.
- There is a critical need for improved health communications regarding e-cigarette contents.
- Mandatory industry disclosures are essential to inform consumers about nicotine dimensions and associated risks.
