Fractures: Bone Repair

3.3K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Bones of the Upper Limb: Radius01:09

Bones of the Upper Limb: Radius

2.2K
The radius is longer of the two bones that make up the human antebrachium or forearm. At the proximal end, the radius articulates with the capitulum of the humerus and the radial notch of the ulna to form the elbow joint. At the distal end, the radius articulates with the ulna via the ulnar notch, forming the distal radioulnar joint. Distally, the radius also attaches to the carpal wrist bones (scaphoid and lunate) to form the radiocarpal joint.
The radius has a nail-shaped head, and a...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Corrective osteotomy can improve outcomes for intra-articular distal radius malunion, but requires careful surgical planning and may not prevent post-traumatic arthritis. This procedure aims to restore function and patient-reported measures.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Traumatology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Intra-articular malunion of the distal radius is a complex orthopedic challenge.
  • While not always requiring intervention, it can lead to functional deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role and outcomes of corrective osteotomy for intra-articular distal radius malunion.
  • To highlight the technical considerations and potential limitations of surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical cases and surgical techniques for corrective osteotomy.
  • Discussion of imaging, planning (including 3D guides), and surgical approaches (volar, dorsal, arthroscopic assistance).

Main Results:

  • Corrective osteotomy can significantly improve range of motion, grip strength, and patient-reported outcomes.
  • The procedure demands meticulous planning and technical expertise, potentially involving multiple surgical sites and implants.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical correction of intra-articular distal radius malunion is a viable option for improving function.
  • Intervention may not alter the long-term prognosis regarding post-traumatic arthritis, which remains a likely outcome.
