Oscillations about an Equilibrium Position01:04

Oscillations about an Equilibrium Position

5.4K
Stability is an important concept in oscillation. If an equilibrium point is stable, a slight disturbance of an object that is initially at the stable equilibrium point will cause the object to oscillate around that point. For an unstable equilibrium point, if the object is disturbed slightly, it will not return to the equilibrium point. There are three conditions for equilibrium points—stable, unstable, and half-stable. A half-stable equilibrium point is also unstable, but is named so...

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic01:25

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

7.3K
In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the...

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Computational Neuroscience

Background:

  • Attentional expectancies dynamically adjust based on incoming evidence in changing environments.
  • Understanding the neural basis of these dynamic attentional shifts is crucial for cognitive science.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural mechanisms of attentional expectancies using a modified Posner Paradigm.
  • To examine how precision of predictions influences attentional allocation and its neural correlates.

Main Methods:

  • Employed a modified Central Cue Posner Paradigm with manipulated cue validity probabilities.
  • Utilized a hierarchical Bayesian model to estimate precision-dependent attention (α).
  • Analyzed electroencephalography (EEG) data, incorporating precision-dependent attention as a regressor.

Main Results:

  • Alpha oscillations (8–13 Hz) before target onset were predicted by precision-dependent attention under high cue predictability (88% valid).
  • This relationship was absent under low predictability conditions (69% and 50% valid cues).
  • Post-target, precision-dependent attention correlated with alpha oscillations only for valid cues.

Conclusions:

  • Trial-by-trial Bayesian belief updating influences the neural encoding of visual spatial attention.
  • Alpha band activity reflects environmentally-sensitive attentional allocation modulated by prediction precision.
  • Cue validity and orientation further interact with precision-dependent attentional modulation.
