Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • The Dynamic Cardiac SPECT (DC-SPECT) system aims to enhance cardiac imaging capabilities.
  • Current iterations feature improved geometrical resolution and sensitivity compared to conventional gamma cameras.
  • Accurate system modeling is crucial for optimizing image reconstruction quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To improve the imaging resolution of the DC-SPECT system.
  • To validate a resolution recovery method using point spread function (PSF) deconvolution.
  • To compare the impact of spatially variant (SV-PSF) and spatial invariant PSF modeling on image reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • List mode MLEM reconstruction with and without PSF deconvolution was employed.
  • An analytic model and Monte Carlo (MC) methods were used for system response calculation.
  • Image quality was assessed by comparing reconstructed images with ground truth and existing systems.

Main Results:

  • PSF deconvolution significantly improved reconstructed image quality.
  • The DC-SPECT system achieved 4.5 mm central spatial resolution with PSF modeling.
  • Spatially variant PSF (SV-PSF) based reconstruction demonstrated superior performance, yielding profiles closer to the ground truth.

Conclusions:

  • PSF deconvolution is a critical technique for enhancing DC-SPECT image resolution.
  • The developed DC-SPECT system with SV-PSF reconstruction offers superior performance compared to the GE Discovery 570c.
  • Further optimization of PSF modeling can lead to even greater improvements in cardiac SPECT imaging.
