Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and feasibility of LifeFlight Nova Scotia's protocol for transporting patients in the prone position.
  • To identify any adverse events associated with prone patient transport.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective quality review of electronic patient care records from February 2017 to June 2022.
  • Inclusion criteria: patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in prone position.
  • Data collected: demographics, transport methods, ventilation parameters, arterial blood gases, and adverse events (hypoxemia, hypotension, cardiac arrest, line displacement).

Main Results:

  • Seventeen prone patients were transported via ambulance, rotor wing, and fixed wing.
  • Four instances of mild hypotension and four of mild hypoxemia were recorded.
  • One occurrence of refractory hypotension was documented.

Conclusions:

  • Interfacility transfer of prone patients by a dedicated critical care team is feasible.
  • The protocol demonstrated minimal adverse occurrences during transport.
  • Ensures patient access to specialized, life-saving care.
