Area of Science:

  • Plant Pathology
  • Virology
  • Genomics

Background:

  • Viral infections pose a significant threat to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) production.
  • Understanding the tomato virome is crucial for developing effective crop protection strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the virome of tomato plants using transcriptome data.
  • To identify prevalent viral species and coinfections in tomatoes.
  • To investigate geographical variations and phylogenetic relationships of detected viruses.

Main Methods:

  • Virome analysis of available transcriptome data.
  • Identification and quantification of viral contigs and reads.
  • Phylogenetic analysis to determine viral origins and diversity.

Main Results:

  • 219 viral contigs from four viruses: tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), southern tomato virus (STV), tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV).
  • ToCV was most abundant by contig count; STV was primary by read count in fruit transcriptomes.
  • Prevalence of coinfections was observed, indicating multiple simultaneous viral infections.

Conclusions:

  • The study advances knowledge of the Korean tomato virome, revealing significant viral presence and coinfections.
  • Highlights the importance of considering viral pathogens in plant research, even when not the primary focus.
  • Emphasizes the need for robust pest control and virus management in greenhouse-grown tomatoes for crop protection.
