Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity01:23

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

58
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.
Parental Influence on Identity Development
Parents serve as primary guides and managers in an adolescent's life, offering support instrumental in decision-making and personal growth....

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.2K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Diabetes Mellitus: Overview and Type I Subtype

2.7K
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels due to inadequate insulin production, insulin resistance, or both. The condition affects millions worldwide and can significantly impact their health and quality of life.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body is unable to produce sufficient insulin, and individuals with...

Diabetes: Management and Pharmacotherapy

289
The therapy for diabetes aims to alleviate hyperglycemia-related symptoms, prevent acute metabolic decompensation, and reduce chronic end-organ complications. Glycemic control is evaluated through short-term (self-monitoring, continuous glucose monitoring) and long-term (A1c, fructosamine) metrics, enabling near real-time tracking of blood glucose levels and reflecting glycemic control over specific time frames.
Insulin remains the cornerstone of treatment for most patients with type 1 and many...

Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

2.4K
Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, arises when the insulin receptors on cells lose responsiveness to insulin, diminishing the cell's capacity to take up glucose, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. To receive a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, a series of blood glucose tests are necessary to assess whether the blood glucose falls within normal parameters. If the result is out of the normal range, a patient may be diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic, depending on the...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

33
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Summary

Parent and adolescent satisfaction with type 1 diabetes management involvement is linked to better health outcomes. Higher satisfaction correlates with improved glycaemic control and psychosocial well-being, especially for adolescents.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Diabetes Management

Background:

  • Parent and adolescent involvement are crucial for managing type 1 diabetes during adolescence.
  • Understanding satisfaction with this involvement is key to improving self-management and health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate factors associated with parent and adolescent satisfaction with their own and each other's involvement in type 1 diabetes management.
  • To explore the relationship between satisfaction and key health indicators.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized cross-sectional baseline data from 157 parent-adolescent dyads.
  • Employed paired t-tests, bivariate correlations, and regression analyses to examine satisfaction levels and correlates.
  • Adolescent ages ranged from 12-19 years, with balanced gender distribution.

Main Results:

  • Higher satisfaction with adolescent involvement was reported by adolescents (43%) than parents (29%).
  • Glycaemic health indicators (time-in-range, HbA1c, hyperglycemia) and psychosocial factors (diabetes distress, depression) correlated with satisfaction.
  • Parent satisfaction with adolescent involvement increased with adolescent age; racial/ethnic differences in satisfaction were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescent and parent satisfaction with adolescent involvement in diabetes self-management are significant indicators of glycaemic control and psychosocial well-being.
  • Parent satisfaction with their own involvement is more strongly associated with diabetes-specific distress.
