Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining effectively identifies goblet cells (GC) crucial for diagnosing Barrett's esophagus (BE). Alcian blue (AA) staining for blue cells (BC) is less sensitive, and their presence doesn't rule out BE.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Histopathology
- Oncology
Context:
- Barrett's esophagus (BE) involves esophageal metaplasia, increasing cancer risk.
- Accurate diagnosis relies on identifying goblet cells (GC).
- Mimicking cells, or blue cells (BC), complicate BE diagnosis.
Purpose:
- To differentiate goblet cells (GC) from blue cells (BC) using histochemical stains.
- Evaluate the diagnostic utility of Alcian blue (AA) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stains.
Summary:
- A cross-sectional study analyzed 45 BE patient samples.
- PAS staining identified GC in 100% of cases.
- AA staining identified BC in only 35.55% of cases, with morphological similarities noted.
Impact:
- PAS staining demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity for GC identification, aiding BE diagnosis.
- Alcian blue (AA) staining for BC is less reliable; BC presence does not exclude BE.
- Accurate histopathological differentiation is key for effective Barrett's esophagus management.
