Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.0K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) Infrared Spectroscopy: Overview

1.5K
Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) infrared spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique used to study the composition of materials. It is widely employed in chemistry, materials science, forensic science, and other fields where sample characterization is required. ATR has several advantages over traditional transmission IR spectroscopy, including the requirement of little to no sample preparation and the ability to analyze a wide range of samples.
The ATR process begins by directing a beam...

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Image Processing
    • Computational Imaging

    Background:

    • Multidimensional imaging captures spatial, spectral, and depth information but often requires slow mechanical scanning or complex multi-modal systems.
    • Coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging (CASSI) uses compressed sensing for 3D datacube recovery from 2D snapshots, but high compression ratios limit reconstruction quality.
    • Existing methods face challenges with underdetermined reconstruction problems, leading to poor spatial and spectral resolution.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a novel two-stage cascaded compressed sensing scheme to overcome limitations in current multidimensional imaging techniques.
    • To enhance spatial resolution, suppress aliasing artifacts, and improve spectral fidelity in datacube recovery.
    • To efficiently record a five-dimensional (5D) plenoptic function in a single snapshot using light field tomography.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a two-stage cascaded compressed sensing scheme named coded aperture snapshot hyperspectral light field tomography (CASH-LIFT).
    • Utilized the compressibility of natural scenes across multiple domains by distributing computation load across two stages.
    • Leveraged snapshot 3D imaging capabilities inherent in light field tomography.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved enhanced spatial resolution and improved spectral fidelity compared to existing methods.
    • Successfully suppressed aliasing artifacts in the reconstructed datacubes.
    • Demonstrated efficient single-snapshot recording of a five-dimensional (5D) plenoptic function.

    Conclusions:

    • The CASH-LIFT method effectively addresses the underdetermined nature of datacube recovery in compressed sensing.
    • This approach significantly improves the quality of spatial and spectral reconstruction in multidimensional imaging.
    • CASH-LIFT offers a powerful and efficient solution for capturing complex, high-dimensional scene information in a single snapshot.
