Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), significantly reduced alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms in a small case series. This suggests GLP-1RAs may offer new therapeutic potential for AUD treatment.

Background:

  • Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major cause of preventable death globally.
  • Current FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for AUD are limited.
  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) show preclinical promise for reducing alcohol consumption.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of semaglutide treatment on AUD symptoms in patients receiving it for weight loss.
  • To assess whether semaglutide use is associated with a decline in AUD symptomatology.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of patients treated with semaglutide for weight loss.
  • Inclusion criteria: positive Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) screening prior to semaglutide initiation.
  • Paired t-test used to compare pre- and post-treatment AUDIT scores.
