Area of Science:

  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Dental Materials

Background:

  • Cantilevered fixed partial dentures (CFPDs) are increasingly recognized for replacing posterior teeth.
  • Single-appointment restorations offer efficiency in dental treatment.
  • Agenesis and recent tooth loss present challenges in prosthetic reconstruction.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old patient with agenesis of maxillary premolars and recent loss of another premolar was treated.
  • A mesial CFPD was fabricated and placed in a single appointment, utilizing an onlay-like retainer on the first molar.
  • The restoration used a chairside CAD-CAM system with a reinforced glass-ceramic block (Emax CAD).

Findings:

  • The CFPD demonstrated successful aesthetic and functional integration.
  • At 11-month follow-up, satisfactory dental hygiene, smooth prosthetic fit, and absence of periodontal inflammation were noted.
  • No abnormal dental mobility or periodontal issues were observed, indicating prosthetic stability.

Implications:

  • Single-appointment CFPDs are a viable and efficient option for replacing missing posterior teeth.
  • Advanced CAD-CAM technology with reinforced ceramics enables predictable and esthetic prosthetic solutions.
  • This approach can lead to long-term functional success and patient satisfaction in restorative dentistry.
