Psychosurgery

Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Unlike parametric methods, nonparametric statistics are ideal for nominal and ordinal data, requiring fewer assumptions about the population's nature or distribution. This makes nonparametric methods easier to apply and interpret, as they do not depend on parameters like mean or standard deviation. One common approach in nonparametric analysis is to sort data according to a specific criterion. For instance, we might arrange weather data from hottest to coldest days in a month or rank cities...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Neurosurgery Training
  • Academic Medicine

Background:

  • Doximity rankings are widely used for evaluating residency programs.
  • Existing ranking systems may not fully capture program quality related to research and academic outcomes.
  • There is a need for objective metrics to assess neurosurgery residency programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the relationship between Doximity rankings and two new metrics: publication rates and academic pursuits of neurosurgery residents.
  • To introduce and validate novel ranking systems for neurosurgery residency programs based on objective academic productivity and career outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Data were collected on 550 neurosurgery graduates over three years.
  • Analyzed median published manuscripts per resident and the percentage of residents pursuing academic careers.
  • Used logistic regression to assess relationships between Doximity rankings, publication rates, and academic pursuits.

Main Results:

  • Neurosurgery residents published a median of 10 manuscripts, with 50% pursuing academic careers.
  • Significant differences were observed in publication rates and academic pursuits across Doximity ranking tiers (P < 0.001 and P = 0.02, respectively).
  • Moderate agreement was found between Doximity rankings, with fair and slight agreement with publication and academic pursuit metrics.

Conclusions:

  • Introduced two new methods for ranking neurosurgery residency programs based on graduate publication rates and academic career pursuits.
  • These novel ranking systems provide a more comprehensive approach for prospective residents to select programs.
  • The findings suggest that publication output and academic career placement are significant factors in residency program evaluation.
