Summary

Half of all UK hand injuries are preventable, primarily wrist and finger fractures from falls or manual labor. Further research is needed to develop effective injury prevention strategies, reducing healthcare costs.

  • The national scale of avoidable injuries presenting to UK medical services is largely unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the type and incidence of preventable wrist and hand injuries at a national level in the UK.
  • To identify common mechanisms and demographics associated with these injuries.

Main Methods:

  • A 2-week service evaluation across 28 UK hospitals in early 2021.
  • Inclusion of 1909 hand trauma patients, collecting demographical and etiological data.

Main Results:

  • The most common injuries included wrist fractures, single phalangeal/metacarpal fractures, fingertip injuries, and infections.
  • Mechanical falls and manual labor were the leading causes.
  • 50% of injuries presenting to hand surgeons were deemed preventable, predominantly fractures.

Conclusions:

  • This study is the first extensive survey of preventable hand injuries in the UK.
  • There is a clear need for targeted injury prevention measures, especially for fractures, to reduce healthcare burden.
  • Further research is required to implement effective prevention strategies.
