    Background:

    • Fractionated irradiation is used to induce tumors for research.
    • Cobalt-60 (60Co) and Californium-252 (Cf-252) are sources of ionizing radiation.
    • Leukemogenesis is the process by which leukemia develops.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the leukemogenic efficiency of fractionated 60Co gamma radiation and low dose rate (LDR) Cf-252 neutron and gamma radiation.
    • To evaluate the latent period and relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of Cf-252 radiation compared to 60Co.

    Main Methods:

    • C57BL mice were exposed to fractionated acute 60Co irradiation or graded doses of LDR Cf-252 irradiation over four weekly intervals.
    • Tumor development and survival times were monitored in irradiated mice.
    • Leukemogenesis RBE (RBEn) was estimated for Cf-252 radiation.

    Main Results:

    • Acute 60Co radiation induced thymic lymphomas in 84% of mice with a median survival time of 162 days.
    • Cf-252 radiation induced thymic lymphomas with a significantly longer latent period.
    • At Cf-252 doses of 112 and 188 cGy, 79% and 70% of mice developed lymphomas, respectively, with an estimated RBEn of 1.0-2.0.

    Conclusions:

    • Cf-252 neutron and gamma radiation is leukemogenic in mice but has a much longer latent period and lower leukemogenic efficiency compared to fractionated 60Co radiation.
    • The RBEn of Cf-252 is low (1.0-2.0) at the large doses per fraction tested.
    • Under the experimental conditions, Cf-252 neutrons were only slightly more leukemogenic than fractionated 60Co.
